Whooping cough - Bordetella pertussis, plague

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis (Latin for severe cough), is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis that can last for several weeks

Infection occurs through so-called droplet infection, a coughing up of pathogens via the air we breathe, which is then inhaled again by another person; or also through direct transmission, such as through kissing.

According to the German Infection Protection Act (IfSG), both the suspicion of an infection, an illness, and laboratory diagnostic evidence must be reported.

  1. Size of the pathogen: 0.8 µm       

  2. Incubation period: 7 - 14 days

  3. Probability of death: up to 2%

  4. Annual infections: 20 million
