Weaker infections, such as a cold, are usually managed by ourselves. Sometimes, however, it makes sense to give antibiotics so as not to expose our weakened immune system to an additional bacterial infection. With more aggressive infections, such as the Ebola virus or HIV, for example, cell damage progresses so quickly that our immune system does not have enough time to adequately fight the virus, and it needs help.
