Varicose veins are partly hereditary and occur mainly in women. Pregnancy, obesity, constipation and long periods of standing increase the risk of varicose veins. Men are also frequently affected.

By changing your lifestyle, you can reduce and prevent the risk of varicose veins.

If you are overweight, you should lose weight. This puts less pressure on existing varicose veins and prevents the development of new ones.

Regular exercise, such as walking or cycling, stimulates blood circulation.

To avoid constipation, drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day and eat a diet rich in fiber.

If you are pregnant or have to stand a lot at work, wear support stockings or tights.
