Ankylosing spondylitis, or ankylosing spondylitis, is an inflammatory and rheumatic disease. It begins insidiously, usually in the sacroiliac joints.

Over the years, the inflammation can spread throughout the spine, usually in episodes. Bone growths slowly form as a result, and these gradually stiffen the spine. Typical symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis include improvement with exercise, morning stiffness, pain mainly in the second half of the night, and exceptionally good response to NSAID medications, such as diclofenac or ibuprofen. (The abbreviation NSAID refers to a group of anti-inflammatory pain medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
