Rubella

Rubella is a contagious viral infection that is now rare due to vaccination in infancy. Vaccination of children, especially girls before puberty, also serves as a preventive measure and protection of the unborn child in a later pregnancy.

Infection of the unborn child, especially in the first three months of pregnancy, can cause the most serious damage. In contrast, the symptoms in children are often so weak that they hardly need any treatment. Often, a mild, non-itchy, reddish rash that spreads from the face to the entire body is the only symptom. Children may develop a mild fever, swollen glands, and runny nose two to three weeks after infection. In adults, the infection may also be associated with headache and joint pain.

Giving painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, will reduce fever and relieve headache and joint pain. Make sure you drink enough fluids.

Important: If you suspect rubella, ask your doctor for an appointment where there are no pregnant women in the waiting room to prevent possible infection. Rubella is contagious for about seven days before it occurs and five days after.
