Prostate hyperplasia - enlargement of the prostate gland

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a benign enlargement of the prostate gland caused by the proliferation of inconspicuous cells. It surrounds the urethra between the bladder and the sphincter.

Increasing prostate enlargement usually results in unpleasant symptoms, such as pain when urinating and frequent trips to the toilet, which mainly affects men in middle to older age. Mild stages of BPH can be treated with medication; however, at a certain level of severity, surgery may be the treatment of choice.

Important to know: Benign enlargement has nothing to do with prostate cancer. From the age of about 50 years, the prostate produces less testosterone and increasingly enlarges to compensate for this. In this respect, a pronounced sedentary lifestyle, a too hard bicycle seat or even a beer belly can have a negative effect. There is evidence that this stimulates the prostate to grow more to counteract pressure.
