Poliomyelitis, colloquially known as polio, is a highly contagious poliovirus infection that usually occurs in childhood.

From the time of infection via droplet or smear infection to the outbreak of the disease, up to 35 days can pass. The disease often passes without signs of symptoms; however, severe courses of the disease, including muscle paralysis, may occur. Most often, polio begins with nonparalytic poliomyelitis, that is, without paralysis or symptoms such as fever, back pain, and stiff neck. In the worst cases, paralytic poliomyelitis presents with paralysis of muscles of the extremities and/or the respiratory organs.
Therapy: There is no medication against the disease. Even inpatient treatment is limited to symptomatic measures, such as subsequent physiotherapy, if necessary. The only measure and protection is a preventive vaccination against poliovirus.
