Poliomyelitis breaks out mainly in children between the ages of three and eight and in many cases remains completely asymptomatic. However, in severe cases, it causes dangerous paralysis of the respiratory muscles and permanent paralysis of the musculoskeletal system.
The eradication of the poliovirus through vaccination is a goal of the World Health Organization (WHO).

In Germany, the disease must be reported in accordance with the Infection Protection Act (IfSG). Notification must be made by name in the event of suspected illness, acute illness or death.
Suspicion is any acute flaccid paralysis that is not traumatic.
