Infants and young children are particularly at risk, as their immune systems are not yet fully developed. However, pneumococcal infections are also often fatal in older people and people with underlying diseases. Pneumococci can cause infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, otitis media, sinusitis, keratitis, and sepsis. Since a pneumococcal infection can cause many diseases, there are no typical symptoms; however, the individual diseases are often accompanied by fever and chills.

Therapy: Risk groups in particular should protect themselves preventively against pneumococcal diseases by vaccination.
