Lymphatic filariasis

Lymphatic filariasis is an infectious disease caused by parasites such as threadworms, also called filariae. It thus belongs to the worm diseases.

Depending on the species, filariasis manifests itself mainly in the lymphatic system or in the superficial as well as deeper connective tissue. The up to 10 cm long and 0.3 mm thick worm can develop so many larvae in the lymphatic vessels that blockage, and thus monstrous edema and proliferation in the connective tissue can occur.


Therapy: Treatment lasting years, with a triple combination of diethylcarbamazine, albendazole and invermectin.

  1. Size of the pathogen: 10,000 µm

  2. Incubation period: 5 - 12 months

  3. Probability of death: up to 20

  4. Annual infections: 2.5 million
