Internal leishmaniasis

The pathogens are L. donovani, in Europe L. infantum. These are transmitted to humans as well as dogs by sandflies. The parasite mainly affects the spleen and liver. Symptoms of infection include skin ulcers, fevers, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Rather rarely, the inner surfaces of the hands and feet as well as mucous membranes turn dark. This disease is thought to have originally spread from East Africa through the Mediterranean region to the Orient and India.
