Particularly in the first five years of life, it can spread to organs and the brain and become dangerous due to an insufficiently developed immune system. The virus, which has often been dormant in the body for a long time, breaks out more frequently when the immune system is weakened, for example during the cold season, or also mostly in neurodermatitis patients.

HSV 1 is mostly responsible for cold sores; HSV 2 causes infections on the mucous membranes of the genitals and is also primarily transmitted during sexual intercourse.
