Hand-foot-mouth disease

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a viral infection for which there is no vaccination, but which is usually relatively harmless. Once you have passed through it, it first leads to immunity for many years.

The disease initially starts with a fever of 38°C to 39.5°C, which very often lasts only one day. Your child has already been contagious for two to three days before the one-day fever; therefore, it does not make much sense to isolate your child afterwards, for example from kindergarten or school. Soon after the fever phase, the child begins to have difficulty swallowing, and as a result, red spots appear with vesicles inside them. Typically, these are found around and in the mouth, in the palms of the hands and on the soles of the feet.

The spots on the hands and feet, which can also spread further over the body, usually do not cause any discomfort. The only real complication can be the blisters in the mouth, which can be painful to varying degrees and can lead to a complete refusal to drink or eat.

Important: If your child is unable to drink due to the pain, fluid replacement through an IV at the doctor's office or hospital is essential.
