Gastroesophageal reflux disease - heartburn

Heartburn, also called reflux esophagitis, often occurs after a heavy meal or while lying down. It is caused by reflux, i.e. backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus.

The burning sensation starts in the stomach and lower sternum and may rise to the throat. Sometimes you also have a bitter taste in your mouth, nausea or bloating and dry cough, especially at night. Keep your head elevated 10 - 15 cm to prevent stomach acid from flowing into your esophagus. If you take a nap, it is best to do so in an armchair.

Antacids (stomach acid binders) can relieve mild heartburn, or stronger-acting prescription medications, such as H2 blockers, can also provide relief.
