Sudden back pain usually occurs due to tension, but can also be caused by a torn muscle or ligament. Back pain is caused by lack of exercise, physical strain and overload, whether due to lack of exercise at home, at work or in sports, or due to permanent posture.
This causes a drilling backache or sharp pain in a particular spot, as well as a stiff back because the muscles are very tense. Tension-related sciatic pain radiates to the buttocks, leg and foot and is sometimes associated with tingling, numbness or weakness in the leg. It occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes muscularly "pinched" or irritated (often also associated with a herniated disc). The most common triggers of "lumbago" or even herniated discs are incorrect lifting of heavy objects or sudden twisting of the spine under load. Poor posture and lack of exercise promote back pain.
Please go to the doctor immediately if you can no longer hold your stool or urine, or in case of clearly persistent tingling and/or numb feeling in the anus or genital area. Sudden, uncontrolled muscle weakness or painful muscle hardness after injury also requires medical attention.
