Diabetes mellitus type 2

Diabetes mellitus type 2, colloquially also known as diabetes of old age, comes from the Greek and means honey-sweet flow. Type 2 diabetes accounts for around 90 % of all diabetes diseases and tends to occur after the age of 40.

The effect of insulin is reduced, both by genetic disease of the beta cells (insulin-producing cells) and by insulin resistance due to damage to insulin receptors. Environmental factors, such as lack of exercise and obesity, which is also associated with metabolic syndrome, also reduce the effect.

Theory: Insulin must also act in fatty tissue, which in obesity leads to insulin production being increased, but on the other hand insulin action on the cells decreases. In the long term, due to high production of insulin, the ß-cells of the pancreas are destroyed.
