It usually occurs in childhood and more commonly before the age of 40. The ß-cells (beta-cells) in the pancreas that produce insulin are destroyed by a dysregulation of the immune system. Therefore, it also belongs to the autoimmune diseases. When 80% of the ß-cells are destructured, the blood sugar level rises due to absolute insulin deficiency.
A form of type 1 diabetes that also occurs in older people is the so-called LADA (Late onset autoimmune diabetes in the adults).
