Fascia - Who treats connective tissue?

Fascia therapy, i.e. the treatment of supporting connective tissue, is actually an ancient "art" that exists in various therapeutic directions almost everywhere in the world.

At the beginning, old, especially Asian therapy methods are to be mentioned here.

Among the best known here are certainly:

  1. Shiatsu is a form of treatment in body therapy developed in Japan and means "finger pressure", but goes far beyond that. It is treated by applying light pressure with the hands (fingers and palms), elbows, forearms and knees along the energy channels, also called meridians. Stretching and joint rotations can release blockages and stimulate the self-healing powers.

  1. Tuina is a Chinese form of massage and one of the five main pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Tuina uses pressing and stroking massage techniques. These combine the philosophy of meridians and acupressure with the knowledge of fascia and muscle chains.

  2. Tai massage: Traditional Thai massage (TTM) is a system of manual techniques known in Thailand as Nuat Phaen Boran. The therapist uses stretching positions and movements, joint mobilization, stroking and pressure point massages on the patient.

  3. Lomi Lomi Nui, also called Lomi Lomi (Traditional Hawaiian Massage), translated means "strong rubbing, kneading or pressing". This massage usually lasts about two hours. A lot of oil is used, originally from the kukui nut. The therapist works with the hands and the entire forearm, including the elbows. Unlike many other therapy methods, there is also the four-handed Lomi massage, which is performed by two therapists at the same time. The techniques are fluid and gently rocking, with the "traditional" treatment accompanied by Hawaiian music and chants, to which the masseur moves in rhythm around the massage table. The treatment can vary greatly in intensity in one treatment session, from gentle to very painful strokes to release deep-seated tensions. In the process, welts and bruises are not uncommon.

In ancient times, of course, stretching exercises and massages were known, for example, the ancient Greeks in Olympia, the bathhouses of the Romans, the sauna of Nordic countries, and to this day, the treatment in the Hammām, the Turkish steam bath.

In Germany, of course, we consider the famous Kneipp therapy, which is still used today for the prevention or treatment of existing fascial diseases, which include, for example, orthopedic diseases in the musculoskeletal system. The principle of action also relies, among other things, on hardening through hot-cold casts, treading water in cold water and brushing with rough brushes and gloves to strengthen the skin and vessels, blood circulation and body defenses.

Finally, we come to the modern forms of fascia therapy.

Among the best known methods today are authoritative:

  1. Physiotherapy: It is a form of manual therapy and physiotherapy designed to restore, improve or maintain the human body's ability to move and function. In Germany, treatment is provided on the instructions of a physician and on prescription.

  2. Osteopathy: an osteopath uses his hands to determine the basic tension and mobility of fascia, muscles, bones, joints and organs and can thus identify and treat disturbed functions.

Osteopathy can be divided into three areas:

Parietal osteopathy - connective tissues, muscles and joints.

Visceral osteopathy - internal organs and their connective tissue suspension and rhythms

Craniosacral osteopathy - internal "rhythm" of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull and dural tube.

In the field of fascia self-treatment, on the one hand, there are movement therapies:

Hatha Yoga (body-centered) originated in India; its roots are in Hinduism and Buddhism. In it, a person is seen as a traveler in the chariot of the material body.

The chariot is the body, the coachman is the mind, the five horses are the five sense organs, the passenger is the soul, and the harness is called "yoga" in Indian.

In the asanas (body postures especially in hatha yoga), mainly resting body postures are used in yoga.

On the other hand, there are also so-called self-treatment tools such as:

  1. The Finnish arch board for stretching and treatment of lateral posture deviation and hunchback.

  2. Fascia rollers or a therapy ball, for example a TRIGGERBALL®.
