Cholera

Cholera, also called bilious diarrhea, is a serious bacterial infectious disease, primarily of the small intestine, caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

It is usually transmitted through contaminated drinking water or infected food. The bacteria can cause extremely watery diarrhea and severe vomiting, leading to life-threatening fluid loss.


Therapy: Early replacement of fluids and electrolytes and administration of antibiotics reduces the probability of death to less than 1%.

  3. Probability of death: up to 60

  4. Infections per year: 300,000
