They cause itchy skin inflammations. In chronic infections, in addition to mucopurulent diarrhea, they can also damage the organs of the liver, bladder, kidney, lungs, and nerves, even leading to organ failure.

Schistosomiasis is spread in warm freshwaters in the southern part of Africa, the Sahara, Corsica, southwest and southeast Asia, and certain countries in South America, such as Brazil and Venezuela, by snails as intermediate hosts.


Therapy: if treated with praziquantel in a timely manner, schistosomiasis is generally well treatable.
