The course of the disease varies depending on whether the pathogen entered a wound and produced an ulcer covered with a black scab, or the pathogen is inhaled and causes flu symptoms such as chills, cough, fever, fatigue, and malaise. Nausea, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting result from eating infected meat. Because of its suitability as a feared bioweapon and the search for defense options, the mode of action of the anthrax pathogen and the course of the disease are well researched. Among other things, research is being conducted to selectively use its effect as a cytotoxin against cancer cells.
