Acute myocardial infarction - heart attack

A myocardial infarction is a sudden lack of oxygen in the heart muscle. The blood vessels become highly constricted, for example due to pathological deposition of cholesterol in the arterial wall (arteriosclerosis), in one or even several arterial branches of the heart.

When the plaque ruptures on the inner wall, dangerous blood clots form, which can lead to occlusion of the blood vessel and a medical emergency. In younger patients, spasm of a coronary vessel (vasospasm) may also be the cause. In about one-third of those affected, a heart attack leads to death in the first few hours, or in the first few days afterward.

Signs of an acute heart attack include tightness of the heart and chest, pain in the chest and/or left arm, profuse sweating and possibly confusion.

In case of acute infarction, call the emergency doctor immediately!
