The Trichinella larva is killed by heating to 70 °C for more than one minute. Symptoms include weakness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, followed by muscle pain, fever, edema around the eyes, and conjunctivitis. Rarely, the heart muscle is affected, which can also make the disease fatal.

The infection is subject to compulsory notification in the European Union.

Therapy: Early administration of worm- and larva-killing drugs, if possible before the parasite settles in the muscles.
